Hyaluronic Acid Injection – Aftercare Advice
What to do after your HA injection today.
You have received a hyaluronic acid injection today at The Podiatry Clinic. Please follow the advice below unless your podiatrist has given you different instructions.
Normal gentle walking is usually fine, but avoid strenuous exercise, prolonged activity or high-impact activity involving the treated joint.
Rest the joint
Take things relatively easy today and build back to normal activity gradually.
Pressure can be normal
Mild tenderness, swelling, bruising or fullness in the joint can happen temporarily.
Gradual improvement
Hyaluronic acid is not an immediate pain-relieving injection; improvement may develop over days or weeks.

Please follow this advice after your injection unless your podiatrist has given you different instructions.
After your injection
Take things relatively easy for the remainder of today. Normal gentle walking is usually fine, but avoid strenuous exercise, prolonged activity or high-impact activity involving the treated joint for approximately 24–48 hours.
You can then gradually return to normal activity according to comfort and the advice given by your podiatrist.
What is normal afterwards?
Following the injection, you may temporarily experience:
- mild pain or tenderness
- a feeling of pressure or fullness in the joint
- minor swelling
- bruising; or
- a temporary increase in your usual symptoms.
These effects are usually short-lived.
Hyaluronic acid is not an immediate pain-relieving injection. Where treatment is helpful, improvement may develop gradually over the following days or weeks. Individual response and duration of benefit vary.
Pain relief
If required, paracetamol can usually be taken if it is normally safe for you.
Continue your usual prescribed medication unless you have specifically been advised otherwise.
Dressing
If a small dressing has been applied, keep the area clean and dry for approximately 24 hours, after which it can normally be removed.
Your ongoing treatment
The injection may be one part of your overall treatment plan. Continue any rehabilitation, exercise, footwear, orthotic or activity advice given by your podiatrist.
If a review has been recommended, please attend as arranged so we can assess your response to treatment.
When should I contact the clinic?
Please contact us if you develop unexpectedly severe or increasing pain, significant swelling, persistent numbness or weakness, increasing redness or warmth, discharge from the injection site, or anything else that concerns you.
Infection following an injection is uncommon but requires prompt assessment.
Seek urgent medical advice if you develop severe or worsening pain with marked redness, heat or swelling, particularly if you also feel unwell or develop a fever.
Seek emergency medical assistance if you develop difficulty breathing or significant swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat.
