Custom Orthotics and Gait Assessment in Birmingham
Clinical assessment, pressure analysis and personalised orthotic prescription under one roof
Foot, ankle or lower-limb pain can be influenced by how you move, how pressure is distributed beneath your feet, your footwear and the demands of work, walking or sport.
At The Podiatry Clinic, we assess these factors before deciding whether orthotics may form a useful part of your management plan. When appropriate, we provide clinic-designed custom 3D-printed orthotics and advanced Phits 3D-printed orthotics, with fitting, review and adjustments included.

Could an orthotics assessment help you?
An assessment may be appropriate if foot, ankle or lower-limb symptoms are affecting walking, work, exercise or sport.
Foot or ankle pain is affecting walking, work or exercise
You have persistent heel, arch or forefoot symptoms
Running repeatedly aggravates a foot or lower-limb problem
You have flat or high-arched feet associated with symptoms or pressure concerns
Your footwear wears unevenly or feels difficult to fit
You have been advised to explore orthotics as part of treatment
Existing insoles or orthotics are uncomfortable, worn or no longer meeting your needs
You want a structured biomechanical, gait and pressure assessment
The purpose of the appointment is to understand the problem, assess relevant contributing factors and discuss the most appropriate options — not to sell an orthotic automatically.
Which assessment should I book?
Both appointments can be booked directly. Choose the option that best fits your symptoms, or call the clinic if you are unsure.

How are custom orthotics prescribed?
Understand your symptoms and goals
We discuss the problem, health and injury history, previous treatment, daily activities, footwear and what you want to return to or manage more comfortably.
Examine movement and foot function
Your podiatrist performs relevant clinical and functional tests. Depending on the appointment, this may include walking or running analysis and video assessment.
Analyse pressure
Static and dynamic pressure measurements help show how force and pressure are distributed beneath the feet, interpreted alongside symptoms and examination findings.
Decide whether orthotics are appropriate
Orthotics are recommended only when modifying pressure, loading or support may contribute to your management plan.
Create the prescription
If you proceed, the prescription is designed using the clinical findings, pressure data, 3D foot scan, footwear, activities and treatment goals.
Fit, review and adjust
The orthotics are fitted with wearing-in guidance. A review approximately six weeks later and up to two adjustments within three months are included.
Not sure whether you need orthotics?
Book an assessment rather than choosing a device in advance. We will explain the findings, discuss alternatives and recommend orthotics only when they are likely to contribute meaningfully to your wider management plan.
How may orthotics form part of treatment?
Orthotics sit between the foot and footwear and can be designed to redistribute pressure, alter loading or provide support for a specific clinical aim. They do not “correct” every foot shape or guarantee that pain will resolve.
Orthotics are normally prescribed as part of a wider management plan rather than as a standalone solution.
When might orthotics be considered?
Following assessment, orthotics may be considered as part of management for selected presentations such as:
The presence of a condition does not automatically mean orthotics are required. Evidence and likely benefit vary between conditions, so recommendations are individualised and reviewed.
Orthotics for different ages, activities and footwear
Children
Children are assessed separately, with attention to symptoms, development, activity, footwear and the clinical reason for considering orthotics. Devices are not prescribed simply because a child has flat feet.
Clinic-designed children’s orthotics are £250 per pair.Running and competitive sport
The advanced assessment can incorporate running pressure analysis and video gait assessment. Orthotics may be designed around the sport, footwear and specific treatment aim.
No performance or injury-prevention guarantee is made.Everyday and work footwear
The prescription considers available shoe space, fit and the time spent standing or walking. Slimmer or footwear-specific profiles and top covers may be selected where appropriate.
Some patients choose a second pair for different footwear. What happens after ordering?
Custom orthotics are usually ready in approximately two to four weeks. Expedited production may be available for an additional charge, subject to the selected device and manufacturing capacity.
At the fitting appointment, we check the devices with your footwear and explain how to increase wear gradually. Mild awareness or temporary adjustment symptoms can occur while adapting, but significant or persistent discomfort should be reviewed rather than ignored.
Bupa biomechanical assessment
Bupa may cover an authorised initial musculoskeletal or biomechanical assessment with Muhammad Tausif, depending on the patient’s policy and pre-authorisation. Custom orthotics themselves are not normally covered through this pathway.
Bupa patients should contact Bupa and the clinic before booking to confirm the authorised appointment, recognised clinician and any personal costs.

Choose the 60-minute advanced assessment for running-related symptoms, complex or persistent lower-limb problems, detailed video or running pressure analysis, or possible ultrasound assessment. Both are custom 3D-printed options designed from an individual prescription. Clinic-designed orthotics are printed in TPU and cost £250. Phits orthotics cost £495 and use a Footscan-integrated workflow with standard PA12 and Dynaprint TPU manufacturing options, selected according to the prescription and footwear.
The initial assessment costs £99 and the advanced assessment costs £175. Clinic-designed custom 3D-printed orthotics cost £250 per pair and Phits orthotics cost £495 per pair. The assessment fee is separate. The device fee includes measurement if required, fitting, wearing-in guidance, a six-week review and up to two adjustments within three months.
They serve different purposes. A retail insole may provide general cushioning or support. A custom orthotic is prescribed for a defined clinical aim using individual assessment and measurements. Custom is not automatically necessary or superior for every patient.
Manufacture normally takes approximately two to four weeks. Expedited production may be available for an additional charge, depending on the chosen device and manufacturing capacity.
No single device is ideal for every shoe. We consider shoe space and intended use during prescription. Orthotics can often be moved between compatible shoes, while some patients choose a second pair for different footwear.
Lifespan varies with material, body weight, activity, footwear and frequency of use. The printed shell may last longer than the top cover. We recommend review when comfort, fit, symptoms or footwear needs change rather than promising a fixed replacement interval.
Yes. Fitting, a six-week review and up to two adjustments within three months are included. A one-year manufacturing warranty applies subject to its terms.
Yes, where assessment identifies an appropriate clinical reason. Children are assessed individually, and orthotics are not automatically required for flat feet or developmental variation.
Bupa may cover an authorised initial musculoskeletal or biomechanical assessment with Muhammad Tausif, depending on the policy. The custom devices themselves are not normally covered. Confirm authorisation with Bupa and the clinic before booking.
