Corns, callus and other skin lesions can sometimes appear similar. If a lesion is bleeding without explanation, rapidly changing, unusually pigmented, ulcerated or otherwise concerning, arrange appropriate medical assessment rather than attempting self-treatment.

Medical and treatment history
We discuss when the lesion appeared, whether it is painful or spreading, relevant health conditions and medication, and any treatments you have already tried.
Clinical examination
Your podiatrist examines the lesion and surrounding skin. Treatment will not proceed if the diagnosis is uncertain or referral is required.
Neurovascular assessment
Relevant circulation and sensation are assessed to help determine which treatments may be suitable and safe for you.
Pressure reduction and lesion care
Where appropriate, overlying hard skin may be carefully reduced. Pressure-relief padding, dressings and Clinisept® may be used when clinically required.

Verrutop®, cryotherapy, Swift® or Remy laser may be started during the first appointment when suitable. Verruca needling requires a separate planned procedure.
What is a verruca?
A verruca is a wart occurring on the foot, commonly on the sole or around the toes. It is associated with the human papillomavirus, or HPV.
Weight-bearing pressure can push the lesion inward and produce overlying hard skin, which may make it uncomfortable during walking or exercise.
Some verrucas resolve without active treatment. Treatment may be considered when a lesion is painful, persistent, spreading, affecting activity, causing concern or has not responded to previous care.
No treatment can guarantee complete clearance. Response varies according to the lesion, its duration and location, individual health factors and the way the immune system responds.

Verruca treatment for children
We assess children from four years of age. A parent or legal guardian must attend for patients under 16.
Treatment depends on the child’s age, the lesion, medical history and ability to understand and tolerate the proposed procedure. Assessment does not mean that every treatment will be suitable.
In some cases, monitoring or conservative advice may be more appropriate than active treatment.
Verrutop is not used below six years of age, and treatments that may be uncomfortable require particular care in younger children.

There is no single treatment that is best for everyone. The recommendation depends on the lesion, its location and duration, previous treatment, age, medical history, treatment tolerance, preferences and budget.
Discomfort varies between treatments and patients. Swift involves brief bursts that can be uncomfortable. Cryotherapy may sting and can produce temporary soreness or blistering. Verrutop may produce temporary burning or tenderness. Needling is performed under local anaesthetic, with post-procedure aftercare required.
The number varies and complete clearance cannot be guaranteed. Verrutop and Remy laser may involve up to six sessions, cryotherapy may require repeat appointments, and Swift commonly involves up to four sessions. Progress is reviewed throughout.
